Are You An Emotional Vampire?

" People Inspire You or They Drain You. Pick Them Wisely".

Have you seen that old skit on Saturday Night Live, Debbie Downer? Always something wrong, glass half empty, always has it worse. We all probably have someone in our life like that.

I am an empath and pick up on other's mood's and emotions very easily. I have been removing myself from texts or the situation if someone starts right out venting too much if I am not in the right headspace to take on other's emotions and moods. Some days I am fine and can let someone vent and I can help but other days I need to step away. All of this is ok and I think it is a good boundary to have.

But what if it's you that is sucking and draining the energy of other's?

Who are emotional vampires? People that have a tendency to drain the emotional energy out of everyone they come in contact with. They can be exhausting. They feed on drama, they seem to always complain. Complaining is contagious but so is gratitude!

You can change your habits and patterns of sucking the life out of family and friends.

  1. Start paying attention to what you have control over.

  2. Practice gratitude. Start a gratitude journal.

  3. Give back to others and show appreciation to others.

  4. Know the difference between venting and dumping.

  5. Take inventory of the people in your life. Who are the people in your life who give you energy and who are those who drain you. If you're surrounded by people who are energy vampires, their negative behaviors can rub off on you. Like I said earlier complaining is contagious.

  6. Practice kindness. Towards yourself and others.

  7. Set boundaries for yourself.

  8. Forgive yourself.

If you feel an urge to call or text a friend to only complain, stop yourself. Take some deep breaths and maybe even meditate or journal. If you are on a text thread of everyone complaining or venting step away, you can feel how much you want to dump and complain and join in, but pause and remove yourself from the situation. Slowly the impulse to complain will go away.

It is not always possible to be in a great mood everyday but when we surround ourselves with happiness and live in alignment we can be aware to stop draining others and manage being drained ourselves.
