Summer Solstice

In the northern hemisphere Wednesday, June, 21st 2023 is the summer solstice. The longest day of the year and marking the first day of summer.

The word solstice means sun standing still and during a solstice, the sun does just that, the sun’s path comes to a stop before reversing direction.

This is a great day to practice yoga, meditate, and journal. In yoga on the summer solstice people practice 108 sun salutations. Simply completing one set of Sun Salutations floods the nervous system with solar energy, both balancing emotions and increasing higher cerebral activity. But why 108? In the Yogic tradition, 108 is a sacred number. The number 108 is considered a sacred number in Hinduism, Buddhism and yogic tradition. Malas beads come in a string of 108 and are used for devotional meditation, mantra and prayer. With each bead a mantra or prayer is repeated to meet a total of 108.

The summer solstice is the perfect time to celebrate yourself, your wins thus far, what are you proud of? What do you want to bring into fruition in the last six months of this year? What are you ready to let go of these last few months and work to release. We do this by making space for both the being and the doing. By slowing down on where we have been and where we want to go.

This is the perfect opportunity to get clear on your direction for the next 3-6 months so you can harness your fire and move forward with intention!

Here are some journal prompts to help you do just that!

This is the perfect time to reflect on what we need to let go of in order to pave the way for new dreams and creations:

  • How have you grown over these past 6 months?

  • How have you challenged yourself?

  • What has reached completion?

  • What are you ready to let go of?

  • What are you really proud of?

  • What have you worked hard on that you have been able to see to fruition?

  • Who has helped you the most? How can you express gratitude to them?

  • What do you want to do and create this summer?

  • What do you want to grow into your life?

  • What do you need to fill yourself up with in order to shine your brightest light?

  • What might you need to release in order to shine your brightest light?

  • What has your inner fire helped you accomplish this year?

Pause for a second and acknowledge everything you have accomplished this year. We never acknowledge what we have succeeded at. Tell yourself how awesome you think you are. We all spend so much time beating ourselves up for the things we don’t get done. Take a moment to acknowledge how much you did get done. It’s a lot. You work hard.

Pause here and give yourself a genuine pat on the back. Life is hard. And you do your best. Be nice to yourself. Say thanks.

Manifest what you want to accomplish the last 6 months:

  • What goals do you have, intentions, dreams?

  • How will you accomplish these?

  • Be very descriptive.

Get outside, watch the sunrise or the sunset.

Happy Summer!!
